Why Steam Accounts Are Real Money
A Steam account isn't just a game library. That's why Steam phishing is an industry: fake tournament invites, fake "vote for my team" links, and fake item trade offers, all pointing to lookalike login pages.
Valve's answer is Steam Guard, and its strongest form is the mobile authenticator.
The Three Levels of Steam Guard
- Email codes (default): Steam emails you a code on new device logins. Only as safe as your inbox.
- Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator (recommended): Rotating five character codes generated in the Steam mobile app.
- Mobile confirmations: Trades and market sales require a tap-to-approve in the app. This is bundled with the mobile authenticator.
How to Set Up the Mobile Authenticator
- Install the Steam Mobile App on your phone and sign in.
- Tap the menu and choose Steam Guard.
- Select Add Authenticator.
- Verify your phone number (Steam sends an SMS during setup).
- Write down the Recovery Code Steam shows you. This is the single most important step.
From then on, logins ask for the five character code from the app, and every trade or market listing needs an in-app confirmation.
Why Steam Codes Look Different
Noticed that Steam codes are five characters with letters, like R7K2M, instead of six digits? Steam Guard is built on the same TOTP standard as other authenticators, but with a custom alphabet of 26 characters and a five character length. Same cryptography, different formatting. Trade Holds: The Part Everyone Complains About
Without the mobile authenticator active for at least seven days, Steam holds outgoing trades for up to fifteen days. With it, trades between long-time friends and market sales confirm instantly through the app. The hold exists because stolen accounts used to be emptied of items within minutes. Annoying? A little. Effective? Very.
Valve has said that account theft dropped massively after trade confirmations launched. The people most inconvenienced by the system are the thieves.
The Scams Steam Guard Can and Can't Stop

Use the Recovery Code you wrote down during setup: it lets you remove the authenticator and add a new one. Without it, you'll need the SMS fallback on your registered number, or Steam Support with proof of ownership (original purchase details help). Recovery without any of these can take a long time.
Can I put Steam Guard on a second device?
Officially the authenticator lives on one phone at a time. Moving to a new phone is easy through the app if you still have the old one, or through your recovery code or phone number if not.
Why does Steam still hold my trades with the authenticator on?
New authenticators carry a seven day probation: trades stay held for the first week after activation. It prevents a thief who just gained control from immediately bypassing holds by adding their own authenticator.
Is the email version of Steam Guard enough?
It's better than nothing, but it can't confirm trades, so your items sit behind fifteen day holds, and its security equals your inbox's security. The mobile authenticator is free and strictly better.
Can family members share one Steam Guard app?
The Steam app supports multiple accounts, so one phone can hold authenticators for several accounts. Each account still needs its own setup. Just remember that whoever holds the phone effectively controls the accounts.
